West Marshall boys downed in districts

URBANDALE — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team was unable to contend with Pella Christian’s size as the Trojans fell to the Golden Eagles in the Class 2A District 13 semifinals on Thursday night, losing 74-43 at Des Moines Christian School.

Pella Christian defeated West Marshall exactly one month earlier too, 71-54, in their regular-season meeting.

Josh Van Gorp led the Eagles (11-10) with 16 points, Dan Jungling added 14 and Keean Caldwell tallied another 12 points as Pella Christian advances to face Des Moines Christian (17-5) in Tuesday’s district finals at Newton. Des Moines Christian defeated PCM, 75-43, in the night’s second semifinal.

West Marshall (6-17) trailed 32-17 at the half but scored the first six points of the third quarter to get back within single digits, but Pella Christian responded in kind to put the game away for good.

Gabe Jones led the Trojans with 10 points, Caleb Keigan added eight points, and Joey Tollefson and Brayden Evertsen both had six points. Evertsen led West Marshall with eight rebounds, while Qwinton Wilder chipped in five points and four assists in the team’s season-ending loss.
