SPORTS SHORTS: East Marshall slips past Spartans, 1-0
GRUNDY CENTER — Kodie Hoskey struck out 14 and Emma Pfantz scored the game’s only run on an error in the top of the eighth inning, lifting the East Marshall softball team to a 1-0 win over Grundy Center on Wednesday night.
Pfantz singled to lead off the eighth, advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on an error.
Hoskey scattered six singles and two walks for the win, allowing only one Spartan to advance to third base. Kennedy Wheater had two of the Mustangs’ six hits against Megan Beck, who walked one and struck out three.
Cougars capitalize where Comets can’t
ACKLEY — The BCLUW baseball team outhit AGWSR but couldn’t convert against the Cougars, falling 12-2 in six innings here Wednesday night.
The Comets (0-5) had six hits to AGWSR’s seven but issued a total of 10 walks. Angus Callaway got the loss on the mound, allowing three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Noah Gallentine had three hits to lead BCLUW. Walker Ashton, Jack Hughes, Aiden Farnsworth and Callaway each added a single in the loss.
East Marshall baseball drops a pair
The East Marshall baseball team was limited to three hits in an 11-1, six-inning loss to host Grundy Center on Wednesday.
Austin Elliott, Landon Elliott and Dane Thompson each had a single for the Mustangs (0-6). Austin Elliott scored the team’s lone run on a wild pitch in the fourth. He also took the pitching loss, surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first in his only inning of work.
East Marshall also lost 8-5 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Tuesday in Gilman. The visiting Rockets broke away from a 5-all tie after three innings.
Kam Monk pitched four innings in a losing cause for the Mustangs. Austin Elliott and Jordan Swift had two hits apiece to lead East Marshall. Eli Curtis hit a double, while Hunter Vilez and Landon Elliott both singled and drove in a run.
