SPORTS SHORTS: Solon stops Trojans in regional opener

SOLON — The West Marshall softball team committed six errors and couldn’t keep pace with Solon as a result, falling 13-3 in six innings in Wednesday’s Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal contest.

The host Spartans (20-13) racked up 16 hits in the win, led by Hilary Wilson who went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Winning pitcher Kayla West went five innings, allowing one earned run while walking one and striking out three. Carly Ellison got the final three outs.

West Marshall junior pitcher Loran Nicholson was ticketed for seven earned runs on 16 hits with one walk and one hit batter.

Seven different Trojans had one hit apiece, as Kalyn Polley, Grace de Neui, Renae Schaper, Josi Zahnd, Morgan Cripps, Nicholson and Avery Randall each had a single. Randall drove in two runs while Polley, Cripps and Nicholson crossed home safely in the season-ending loss for West Marshall (9-8).
