Bobcats slip in return trip to Veenker

Grant Greazel

AMES — Marshalltown junior golfer Grant Greazel returned to the top of the charts but the Bobcats couldn’t climb with him.

Greazel scored his third medalist round of the season but the MHS boys’ golf team settled for third place at the Ames Quad on Thursday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.

Greazel shot a 7-over-par 77 to take the top spot by one stroke, holding off Sam Vertanen of Ames, but the host Little Cyclones took the team title with a combined score of 323. Ankeny Centennial came in second, just six shots back at 329, while Marshalltown was third at 354 and Fort Dodge was fourth at 397.

The Bobcats shot a 332 in a dual meet loss to Ames earlier this season at Veenker, leaving a lot to be desired from Thursday’s outcome.

Colin Schmit was the second-best Bobcat finisher for the day, claiming 10th place individually with his round of 87. Cael Sandvick scored 15th with a 91, followed by Drake Polley’s 99 to complete the team score. Ryan Schmit (102) and Kevin Strand (104) also competed for MHS.

Greazel’s winning round included three birdies — two of them coming on par-3s — as he held off Vertanen’s home-course advantage.

The Bobcats dive back into action next Wednesday with the Ankeny Invite starting at 9 a.m. at Otter Creek Golf Course.
