Indianola laps Bobcats on Senior Night

The season for Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving has been all about gradual improvements and stamina-building. The Bobcats continued to show signs of progress Thursday evening against Indianola despite losing the dual meet 113-70.

MHS head coach Angie Nelson said it was a mixed bag, but that there were time drops and still positives to take away from a tough matchup.

“We’re doing the right things,” Nelson said. “We’re seeing the girls’ times come down. We have a lot of tough competitions in the CIML.”

The Bobcats started the Senior Night meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, the A-team finishing behind all three of the Indianola teams with Erin Stanley, Riley Robinson, Hannah Case and Maeve Janssen scoring a time of 2:18.46.

The best drop of the day came form Case, who dropped 20 seconds in the 500 freestyle event and finished in third place with a time of 6:24.26. Nelson said Case was impressive in her stamina and said she still had a little bit of energy left at the end of the race, which is what Nelson is trying to get across the board as the season presses on.

The different nature of dual meets to the invitationals is something that can make things more difficult for a team, Nelson explained.

“It does really seem a little bit more like a workout than it does like a meet,” Nelson said. “We expect them to be at their best or right around, we want them to swim faster obviously but with the circumstances and going from event to event that’s not always the easiest thing to do.”

The quick nature of the meets and lack of a rest period meant the Bobcats didn’t have as many drops as they would have liked, but maintaining is just as important, Nelson said.

One Bobcat who did have a strong day was Lesli Waltermire. Waltermire won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.50, the 100 freestyle at 57.76 (a season-best), was the closing leg in the victorious 200 freestyle relay team with an event-best 25.96 split and helped the Bobcats come within four seconds of winning the 400 freestyle relay.

Senior Klaudia Hernandez won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.53 and finished third in the 100 butterfly while contributing to the two relay wins as well.

Averie Whitkop came in third in the 200 freestyle at 2:14.09, finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.15 and was a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Taylor Jones was also a part of the team’s strongest relay performances in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Three Marshalltown divers also competed in a six-dive event, with Hannah Taylor beating out Abby Tollefson 259.25-243.55. Kaisa Stanley was third at 214.80.

Nelson was impressed with the dives.

“Divers tonight were solid, it was really fun to watch,” Nelson said. “Highest scores for a six-dive meet for all three of the varsity divers, so that was a great night.”

Seniors Hernandez, Taylor and Diana Espinoza were honored for their contributions to Bobcat swimming during the meet.
