PREP FOOTBALL: Redhawks take to air for first win

NEW SHARON — The North Tama football team scored its first win of the season behind a record-setting passing performance on Friday night.

The Redhawks (1-3) defeated North Mahaska 29-12, powered by the school’s single-game passing record of 364 yards. Gabe Kopriva finished 17-for-26 for 304 yards — the program’s second-highest single-game yardage mark — with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Adam Greiner was the Redhawks’ top receiver, hauling in four passes for 152 yards, while Caleb McKiernan came up with five grabs for 95 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns. Noah Weber added three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Devin McKinley scored on a 21-yard touchdown run for the Redhawks’ final points.

Belle Plaine 20, BCLUW 7

CONRAD — Belle Plaine rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns to defeat BCLUW 20-7 on Friday night.

The Comets (1-3) were led by running back Carson Hoffman, who carried 27 times for 106 yards and the team’s only touchdown on Homecoming night. Walker Ashton was thrust into the starting quarterback spot and finished 2-for-11 passing for 20 yards, with both passes going to Hoffman.

Nick Pieper and Jack Hughes both had interceptions for the BCLUW defense. Kade Pekarek led the way with eight tackles and Hughes had seven more.

Meskwaki 32, Colo-NESCO 27

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — A pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns rallied the Meskwaki Warriors to a 32-27 victory over Colo-NESCO in Friday’s 8-Man District 5 clash.

Taurice Grant finished 11-for-19 passing for 162 yards and a touchdown and rushed eight times for 81 yards, including a 53-yard TD dash. Larnell Velaquez completed his only pass attempt for a 40-yard touchdown to Evan Nelson, who ended the night with six catches for 73 yards.

Daymon Rosenberger carried 10 times for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Tiernan Wanatee led the Warrior defense with 12.5 tackles, including one sack, and Velaquez made an interception.

West Marshall 60, Roland-Story 13

STORY CITY — Preston Pope ran for 148 yards and three touchdowns to help West Marshall defeat Roland-Story 60-13 in Friday’s Class 2A District 3 football game.

Grahm Nason added a 71-yard touchdown run and Caden Vellinga scored from 47 yards out as the Trojans (3-1) rushed for 338 yards and 5 TDs on just 32 carries.

Pope also had a 38-yard punt return for touchdown, Brayden Evertsen returned a punt 45 yards for a score, and the Trojan defense recorded six quarterback sacks. Pope and Evertsen both had touchdown catches as well.

Evertsen’s 8.5 tackles and 2.5 sacks led the defense, and Parker Reese had eight stops with 1.5 sacks.

BGM 42, GMG 0

BROOKLYN — The GMG football team was limited to 169 yards of total offense as BGM collected a 42-0 victory in Friday’s 8-Man District 5 football clash.

BGM sophomore quarterback Jacob Maurer ran for 181 yards and a touchdown and threw for 131 yards and another score for the host Bears (3-1).

GMG quarterback Kooper Gill finished 11-for-24 passing for 104 yards with an interception. Brayden Anderson made four catches for 51 yards and Avery Bryant had five grabs for 40 yards to lead the Wolverines (0-4).

Anderson also had the GMG defense’s lone takeaway with an interception.
