PREP VOLLEYBALL: Bobcat volleyball struggles at Cedar Falls Invite

CEDAR FALLS — Marshalltown volleyball (5-8) struggled to a 1-2 weekend at the Cedar Falls invite, losing 2-0 to Prairie (11-7) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (3-8) before ending the event with a 2-0 win over Cedar Rapids Washington (0-16).

The Bobcats were close in both sets of the loss to Prairie, scoring 20 in each set and getting 18 assists from Sydney Faltys. Sophie Younkin led with seven kills.

In the loss to CR Jefferson, the Bobcats fell 25-11, 25-15 and were led by six kills from Autumn Finch and 13 assists from Faltys.

The day ended with a convincing 25-11, 25-15 win over the winless Warriors, boosted by nine Younkin kills and seven from Finch.

Up next for Marshalltown is a home game Tuesday night against Mason City.

Mustangs sweep in South Tama Tournament

TAMA — East Marshall volleyball (7-10) beat BGM (1-11) and Belle Plaine (9-5) in the South Tama Tournament over the weekend, sweeping both games 2-0.

Against BGM, the Mustangs beat the Bears 21-14, 21-15 and were led by three kills by Clare Veren and six assists from Faith Bandstra. On defense, J.J. Westendorf recorded 10 digs and Veren had five blocks.

The win over Belle Plaine was a tale of two sets, with a dominant 21-10 win in set one followed up by a close 21-19 closeout win. Veren again led the team in kills (five) and blocks (four). Bandstra and Noelia Aguilera tied for the team lead with four assists each. Jane Collum had nine digs.

BCLUW goes 1-3 in Dunkerton Tournament

DUNKERTON — BCLUW (11-9) volleyball had an up-and-down weekend, defeating Waterloo Christian 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) in the Dunkerton Tournament but going 1-3 overall with 2-0 defeats to Clear Creek-Amana (14-3), Turkey Valley (7-4) and Dunkerton (12-7).

The Comets were led by Eden Wilson and Lizzie Garber in their win over Waterloo Christian, as Wilson got 12 kills while Garber got six of her own and recorded 13 assists.

Garber had 15 digs on defense.

Against Clear Creek-Amana, the Comets struggled to a 21-13, 21-9 defeat against the Clippers, who won the Tournament.

BCLUW lost the first set against Turkey Valley 21-15 before fighting back and falling 23-21 in the second set.

Dunkerton won 25-19 and 25-22 in its game against the Comets, who finished off the week 1-4 following a loss to rivals No. 6 Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Up next for the Comets is a road game Tuesday night against East Marshall.
