South Tama sends one to state

WAVERLY — South Tama County’s Tommy Tyynismaa qualified for the Class 3A state meet as a freshman after a 13th place finish in Wednesday’s district meet at Wartburg College.

The Trojans finished 10th out of 13 in the team standings with a score of 282, but Tyynismaa made it to state by finishing in the top-15 and being an individual qualifier. With a time of 16:55.58, he came in just two seconds before 16th-place finisher Arlo Hayes of Decorah.

Tyynismaa is the first qualifier for the South Tama County boys since Blake Keller in 2015.

The South Tama girls finished eighth in the team standings with a score of 256, led by Alyssa Chyma in 28th place with a time of 21:14.97 for the senior. Jojo Tyynismaa finished in 33rd place, running a time of 21:25.80.

Tommy Tyynismaa’s state meet debut will be Friday, Oct. 30, in Fort Dodge, shortly after the Class 4A meet takes place that morning.
