Waltermire wins conference title as Bobcat girls swim, dive to 4th

FORT DODGE — Over the two days of the CIML Iowa Conference girls’ swimming and diving meet held Tuesday and Thursday, one team separated itself from the chase pack. That team was not the Bobcats.

Marshalltown finished fourth out of five teams in the final standings on Thursday with 222 points, beating host Fort Dodge.

The first event was diving on Tuesday, and the Bobcats had three of the top five finishers. Hannah Taylor came in second with a score of 454.45, Abby Tollefson was fourth with 394.80 and Mia Rasmusson finished fifth after scoring 369 points.

In Thursday’s swimming competition, Marshalltown freshman Lesli Waltermire captured a conference title with a win in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in with a season-best time of 25.86 seconds. Maeve Janssen finished fourth with a personal-best 26.83 and Taylor Jones came in sixth with a 28.58.

The Bobcats finished fourth in the first event of of the night, the 200-yard medley relay, with a season-best time of 2:02.40. Averie Wittkop, Klaudia Hernandez, Waltermire and Janssen competed on the Bobcats’ ‘A’ team. Waltermire came sixth in the 100 butterfly and then helped the Bobcats to a season-best time and third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay along with Wittkop, Hernandez and Jones (1:48.35).

Wittkop finished fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.38. She was also fifth in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:00.73.

The Bobcats next compete in regionals, with diving Nov. 5 and swimming Nov. 7 at West Des Moines Valley.
