Iowa’s Garza garners Big Ten award
ROSEMONT, Ill. — University of Iowa senior Luka Garza has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Player of the Week following a pair of Hawkeye victories last week.
Garza averaged 33.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots in wins over North Carolina Central and Southern University. The 6-foot-11, 265-pound center shot 86.2 percent from the field, going 25-for-29. He was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
Entering Monday, Garza led the nation in scoring average, sparked by a 41-point game against Southern on Friday night in Iowa City. His 36-point first half is believed to be the most points scored by a Hawkeye in a half in program history.
The 41-point performance broke the Carver-Hawkeye Arena record for an Iowa player, eclipsing the 36-point plateau established by Rob Griffin in 2000 and matched by Adam Haluska in 2006.
Garza has scored at least 20 points in 18 straight games heading into Thursday’s home contest against Western Illinois.
