SPORTS SHORTS: Bryant’s big night propels GMG past Clarksville

GARWIN — GMG senior forward Avery Bryant scored a career-high 35 points and the Wolverine boys’ basketball team blistered Clarksville 84-33 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

Bryant got 17 2-point field goals in his career game, finishing with more points than the Wolverines’ opponent. Kooper Gill added 12 points, Jabari Woodbury had 11, Austin Vaughn finished with eight, Zach Krull chipped in seven and Abe Dieleman netted six for GMG (4-1).

Clarksville slipped to 0-6 with the loss.

Trojans fall in league debut

NEVADA — The Nevada boys’ basketball team pounced on West Marshall and put the Trojans away for a 60-28 victory in Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference opener.

Ty Dittmer scored a game-high 15 points to pace Nevada (2-3), while Colin Memmer added 11 points for the Cubs.

Peyton Hart and Brayden Evertsen led West Marshall (0-2, 0-1) with eight points apiece. Parker Reese, Grahm Nason and Joey Tollefson each chipped in four points. Hart and Nason had seven rebounds each to lead the Trojans, and Evertsen added six more.

Nevada knockss off Trojans

NEVADA — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team suffered defeat in its return to the Heart of Iowa Conference, falling 48-30 to Nevada on Friday night.

Nevada (2-3) took off for a 15-7 first-quarter lead and opened the gap to 27-9 by halftime. Shelbi Hazlitt led the Cubs with 23 points and Sydney Mosinski added 14 as former West Marshall assistant coach Jordan Bentley got his first win in five tries against Trojan head coach Fred Zeller since leaving State Center.

Katy Reyerson led West Marshall (2-2) with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kikki Pfantz, Lauren Solberg and Delaney Nichols scored four points apiece, and Nichols pulled down five boards.

GMG girls beaten at home

GARWIN — The Clarksville girls’ basketball team got out to a 12-0 lead on its way to a 56-24 triumph over GMG in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Clarksville (5-1) used its early spurt to score a 20-3 lead through the opening quarter, and the Indians led 29-8 at the half.

Sierra Vance led Clarksville with 19 points and Cheyenne Behrends added 13 more.

GMG (1-4) was led by Emily Vaughn with 12 points, and Adelyn Sienknecht added five.

Redhawks edged by Royals

COLO — The Colo-NESCO girls’ basketball team outscored North Tama 23-20 in the second half to overcome a one-point halftime deficit in a 44-42 Iowa Star Conference South Division victory here Friday night.

The Royals (4-2) led 13-4 after the first quarter but fell behind 22-21 after the Redhawks (1-3) outscored them 18-8 in the second period.

Jenna Banks scored a career-high 20 points to lead Colo-NESCO, also adding six steals and four rebounds to the cause. Jenna Hill added nine points.

Rylee McLean posted 12 points to pace North Tama. Aubree Monat and Abby DeBoef had eight points apiece, and both Lainey Willenbring and Julianna Breakenridge scored seven points.

Spartans chase off Comets

CONRAD — Five players scored in double figures for Class 2A No. 11 Grundy Center and the Spartans dispatched the BCLUW girls’ basketball team, 59-29, in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

Emma Beck made four 3-pointers to lead Grundy Center (3-0, 2-0) with 12 points, Bailey Reding racked up 11 points, and Paiton Wallis, Dahlia Gardiner and Bella Dole pitched in with 10 points apiece. Gardiner had seven rebounds and Wallis eight steals to lead the Spartans.

Allison Engle led BCLUW (2-3, 0-2) with 11 points and eight rebounds. Betula Messerly finished with seven points and six rebounds, and Chloe Walters contributed six points in the loss.
