Centennial steers clear of Bobcats

ANKENY — Once the ball got rolling, the Bobcats couldn’t stop it.

Class 4A No. 4 Ankeny Centennial held the Marshalltown boys’ basketball team to its second-lowest scoring output of the season, collecting the season sweep with Friday’s 75-38 triumph in CIML Iowa Conference play.

The host Jaguars (8-1, 6-0) made sure that Marshalltown (2-9, 2-4) couldn’t duplicate its first four-quarter fight by holding the Bobcats to just 29 percent shooting from the field. Ankeny Centennial also shot exceptionally well, going 27-for-52 from the field (52 percent) while knocking down 10 of its 22 3-point attempts (45 percent).

Caden Kelling made three 3-pointers on his way to a team-leading 18 points for Centennial, while Lio Aguirre added 15 points and Jaron Crews had 14.

The Jaguars led 10-2 after the opening quarter and chased off the Bobcats by halftime, 39-13.

“It snowballed on us in a hurry,” MHS head coach Michael Appel said.

Armonniey Thomas led Marshalltown with 10 points and six rebounds, Prince Jallah had nine points and five boards, and Isaiah Borgos added eight points in spite of foul trouble.

Drake Kapayou chipped in a pair of 3-pointers for six points and Justin Melde added five points in the Bobcats’ third-straight defeat.

Marshalltown plays twice on the road next week, venturing to Des Moines North on Tuesday and Mason City next Friday.
