Fifth-ranked Jaguars take down MHS

ANKENY — The high points included holding Class 5A No. 5 Ankeny Centennial to 27 fewer points than the first time around and showing increased patience on the offensive end of the floor.

The low notes were led by a season-low scoring output and another lopsided loss.

The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team sustained a 71-8 loss at the hands of the Jaguars on Friday night in CIML Iowa Conference play, though it was a marked improvement from a 98-13 loss in their first pairing a little more than a month ago.

Centennial senior Maggie Phipps scored a game-high 22 points, Lizzie Strom added 14 off the bench, and Jackie Pippett added 11 as the Jaguars (10-1, 7-0) remained unbeaten in league play.

Marshalltown (1-12, 0-6) got three points from Lily Roberts and Sophie Younkin and a layup from Rachel Smith, but the Bobcats didn’t get on the scoreboard until their hosts were already into double digits.

“This was a game where the final score did not accurately reflect what we saw on the floor,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “Offensively we showed the most patience that we have all year, which in turn limited their transition opportunities for most of the first half. Our defense forced tough shots for most of the first half, and a majority of their shots were contested.”

Murphy attributed Ankeny Centennial’s big scoring surges to the Bobcats’ lack of depth, with the subsequent fatigue affecting his team’s decision-making. He also credited post defenders Younkin and Kaylin Smith with a solid effort in trying to limit Strom and Pippett in the paint.

“They both battled for position all night, and forced tough shots for most of the game,” Murphy said. “We showed what we can look like when we move the ball and wait for quality attempts.

“We have opportunities next week to start applying that mindset, but we’ll need to keep that same mindset for the entire game to start making the leap that we’ve been waiting to see.”

Marshalltown goes on the road next week to Des Moines North on Tuesday and Mason City on Friday.
