Gomez leads ’Cat matmen at CIML Iowa

Julian Gomez

FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown wrestling team filled only half of its lineup and finished last out of six teams at the CIML Iowa Conference tournament on Friday at Fort Dodge.

The Bobcats totaled 78.5 points and had one finalist, as Julian Gomez reached the championship match at heavyweight. He was defeated by No. 2 Gabe Greenlee of Ames in a 10-3 decision, but still topped Marshalltown’s list of performances for the night.

Both Dylano Castellanos (170 pounds) and Gannon Williams (195) collected third-place finishes after semifinal losses. Castellanos bounced back from a loss by technical fall to Ankeny’s Nate Nessa to win twice in the consolation bracket, pinning Mason City’s Riley Monahan and scoring a 5-2 decision over Fort Dodge’s Matt Surles-Davis.

Williams was pinned by Ankeny Centennial’s Jackie Wells, but Williams responded by pinning Briar Fitz of Ames and Pry’shayn Mosley of Fort Dodge, both in the first period, to fight back for third place.

Luke Hageman (132) and Nick Rebik (160) both placed fourth in their respective brackets, while Hector De La Cruz (120) and Saul Pantoja (126) each placed fifth.

Ankeny Centennial took the team title with 206.5 points, followed closely by Fort Dodge (199) and Ankeny (197.5). Ames (122.5) and Mason City (109.5) filled out the field in front of the Bobcats.

Marshalltown makes up its dual meet at Waukee next Thursday, and MHS hosts its district meet on Feb. 13 at noon inside the Roundhouse.
