PREP BASKETBALL: Trojan girls fall short to Independence

TAMA — In the first game after winter break, 13 points from Carissa Musgrave was not enough for the Trojans to pick up their first win of the season. South Tama (0-6) fell behind in the third quarter after taking the lead into halftime and lost 44-31 to Independence (2-6) Tuesday night.

Musgrave’s 13 points were a team high, and she contributed seven steals as well. Theo the notable line was from junior Neena Lasley, who scored nine points and contributed two of the team’s four 3-pointers.

The Trojans were up 19-17 at half but a three-point third quarter left them trailing by seven and unable to recover.

Meskwaki picks up second win of season

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — The Meskwaki Warriors girls’ basketball team got one over on Janesville Tuesday night at home, beating the Wildcats 44-37 behind 24 points from Deandra Navarro and moving to 2-6 on the season.

The Wildcats (1-9) led 23-14 at the half and were in control of the game. But in the second half the Warriors outscored Janesville 30-14 to pull back ahead and take the win.

Navarro hit eight of her 13 shot attempts and was 6-for-10 from the free-throw line. Six steals helped her cause. Geanna Bear also contributed with 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

G-R takes down South Hardin

REINBECK — The Rebels are back above .500. The G-R girls’ basketball team defeated South Hardin (2-8, 1-3 NICL West) 40-19 in NICL West action Tuesday night, moving to 4-3 and 3-o in conference play.

The Rebels led 21-8 at halftime and didn’t relent in the second half, holding South Hardin to 11 points and controlling the game in all facets.

Saari Kuehl led G-R with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, but junior Katie Clark contributed 12 points and seven rebounds of her own. Mahayla Olson had eight points, six rebounds and six assists.

G-R boys fall just short to South Hardin

REINBECK — A big game from Caleb Egesdal and 70 team points was not enough for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team to overcome the South Hardin Tigers Tuesday night. The Tigers held on to a slim lead in the second half to take a 71-70 victory and deal G-R (4-2, 2-1 NICL West) its first conference defeat of the season.

Egesdal was perfect from 3-point range, hitting seven out of seven and adding three assists to his game-high in points. He was one of four G-R players to reach double figures. William Kiburis scored 17 and added 10 assists, Tristen Sanford-Anders scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds while Dylan Riffey sored 10.

The Rebels lost the second quarter 22-17 and were unable to overcome the two-point halftime deficit.

South Tama doubled by Independence

INDEPENDENCE — Poor starts to the first and second halves left the South Tama boys’ basketball team in catchup mode all game long. It wasn’t enough for the Trojans, as Independence (3-3) beat STC (0-4) 72-36 Tuesday night.

South Tama scored four points in the first quarter and trailed 18-4. At half, the score was 32-17. But in the third quarter the Trojans were outscored 20-4, rendering the final eight minutes moot.

Leading the charge for South Tama was Kenny Balderas with nine points. Freshmen Gavin Bridgewater and Tommy Tyynismaa scored eight points apiece for the Trojans.
