PREP ROUND-UP: West Marshall holds off rival Mustangs

LE GRAND — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team flipped the calendar and fired out of the blocks on its way to a cross-county win over East Marshall, 64-60, on Tuesday night.

The Trojans (3-5) led 32-19 at the half before holding off the host Mustangs (3-5), who won the second half 41-32. It wasn’t enough to atone for the early deficit, however, as East Marshall sustained its third-straight loss.

Joey Tollefson led West Marshall with 18 points, Peyton Hart had 17, and Parker Reese contributed a career-high 14. The Trojans also got career-highs from Owen Siegert (nine points) and TJ Schuler (six).

Logan Bowie scored a season-high 21 points to lead East Marshall, and Drew Runner finished with 18 points. Ethan Espenscheid contributed 12 points and Junior Brown added seven in the Mustang loss.

GMG rallies past Regents

WATERLOO — Avery Bryant posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the shorthanded GMG boys’ basketball team beat Waterloo Christian 53-40 in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference match.

Austin Vaughn added 14 points, Zach Krull had eight points and eight boards, and Jabari Woodbury chipped in seven points as the Wolverines (6-2) overcame the absence of reserves Kaleb Gill and Brayden Duden.

GMG trailed by five at halftime, 23-18, before outscoring the host Regents (1-7) by a 35-17 margin in the second half.

Dominick Jones led Waterloo Christian with a game-high 18 points.

Trojans take down Mustangs

LE GRAND — Katy Reyerson had a double-double and the West Marshall girls’ basketball team bounced back for a 55-25 win over East Marshall on Tuesday night.

The Trojans (7-3), who suffered defeat Monday at the hands of Class 1A No. 9 Montezuma, rebounded to beat their cross-county rivals convincingly. Reyerson, a sophomore, finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way.

Lauren Solberg finished with nine points and seven rebounds, Delaney Nichols had seven points and 12 boards, and Kiki Pfantz and Avery Randall both had seven points for West Marshall.

Morgan Neuroth led East Marshall with 10 points, while Leila Shetler chipped in six points and Ellie Hull four for the Mustangs (3-6), who trailed 28-16 at the half.

Jesup overtakes Comets

JESUP — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter but couldn’t close it out as Class 2A No. 12 Jesup rallied for a 60-52 victory over the Comets in Tuesday’s cross-NICL clash.

Jesup went 5-for-8 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter to overtake BCLUW for the win.

Natalie O’Conner led the J-Hawks with 20 points, Laney Pilcher added 16 points and Alexis Larson had 14 more for Jesup (8-1).

Allison Engle notched a game-high 24 points and a team-leading seven rebounds for BCLUW (3-6), while Chloe Walters finished with 17 points and six boards. Lizzie Garber added six points, five rebounds and five assists in the loss.

GMG falls to host Regents

WATERLOO — The GMG girls’ basketball team couldn’t get the shots to drop in a 47-31 loss to Waterloo Christian in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Faith Trelka scored 18 points and Reagan Wheeler added 13 more for the Regents (5-3), who broke away from a 6-all tie late in the first quarter to lead by 12 at halftime.

Emily Vaughn paced GMG (2-6) with 11 points, while Jenna Yilek added eight and Jocee Mason had five.

MONDAY

Early deficit sinks STC boys

VINTON — The South Tama boys’ basketball team fell behind 42-10 by halftime and suffered a 57-31 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg (3-4) in Monday’s WaMaC West Division contest.

Gavin Bridgewater led STC (0-3, 0-2) with six points and six rebounds, while Tommy Tyynismaa notched five points off the bench. Eli Keahna, Pablo Ramirez and Tyler Moran each chipped in four points for the Trojans.

SATURDAY

Mustang matmen go 0-3

INDEPENDENCE — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team took it on the chin Saturday with an 0-3 showing at the Independence quadrangular.

The Mustangs fell to New Hampton (71-6), Class 2A No. 8 Independence (67-12) and Mount Vernon (45-27) on the day.

East Marshall/GMG senior Conner Murty, ranked eighth in 2A, went 3-0 at 220 pounds with two pins and a minor decision to lead the team. He scored a 10-5 win over New Hampton’s Landon Moorman before pinning Independence’s Korver Hupke in 1:05 and Mount Vernon’s Clark Youngreen in 58 seconds.

Samuel Bandstra was the only other Mustang with more than one win, going 2-1 at 170 with a pair of first-period pins as well. He stuck Indee’s Justin Wood in 1:46 and Mount Vernon’s Ryder Bunch in 49 seconds.

Kordell Negrete (138), Tim Benson (152) and Logan Walton (182) earned wins against Mount Vernon, including pins for Benson and Walton.
