PREP WRESTLING: MHS matmen swept in conference triangular

Sergio Zaragoza

ANKENY — The Marshalltown High School wrestling team suffered a pair of defeats on Thursday night in Central Iowa Metropolitan League action, falling 50-25 to host Ankeny Centennial and 54-24 to West Des Moines Valley.

The highlights for the Bobcats included three wrestlers going 2-0 for the night, led by seventh-ranked Carson Williams at 220 pounds. Williams pinned both of his foes, flattening Centennial’s 10th-ranked Jackie Wells in 2 minutes, 54 seconds, and Valley’s Trystin Irvin in 2:20.

Marshalltown’s Sergio Zaragoza scored the biggest win of his career during his 2-0 showing at 182 pounds, winning a 6-2 decision over Valley’s third-ranked Jack McCabe. Zaragoza also ousted Centennial’s Kaden Kaiser by major decision, 14-4.

Luke Hageman also went 2-0 for the Bobcats at 132, scoring a minor decision and a technical fall.

Marshalltown’s other match wins came from Gannon Williams with a first-period pin of Centennial’s Alex Heimer at 195 pounds, and Saul Pantoja’s 19-9 major decision over Valley’s Sage Gilman at 126.

Mustangs split at Benton triangular

VAN HORNE — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team split against a pair of WaMaC Conference foes on Thursday night, beating Clear Creek-Amana (42-33) before falling to host Benton Community (37-31).

The featured match of the night was Dominik Ridout’s 126-pound victory over Benton’s Jaiden Moore. Moore, who last year was a Class 1A state runner-up for Don Bosco, moved up from 113 pounds to face off with Ridout. Both ranked second at their respective weights in 2A, Ridout captured a 5-4 triumph.

Ridout won his other match, pinning CCA’s Max Carlson in 1:29.

Seventh-ranked Conner Murty spent just 42 seconds on the mat in his two wins at 220, pinning CCA’s Tyler Steines in 37 seconds and Benton’s Alec Steggall in 5 seconds.

Tim Benson (152), Garrett Kerber (160) and Sam Bandstra (170) each went 2-0 with a pair of pins.

Trojans go 1-2 in quad

STATE CENTER — West Marshall Wrestling went 1-2 Tuesday night in a home quad, falling short against Gilbert and Nevada while beating Boone.

Against Gilbert, the trio of Reece Vogel (160 pounds), Austin Pfantz (170 pounds) and Grant Nason (182 pounds) each pinned their opponents, putting the Trojans back into a match Gilbert had control of early on. It wasn’t enough to overcome the Tigers in a 42-36 defeat, though.

The loss to Nevada was even closer. Caden Vellinga (132) scored a win via major decision and Miles Moore (138) won via a decision to put the Trojans ahead. Later in the meet, Pfantz and Nason pinned their opponents for the second-straight match. Two late defeats for the Trojans gave Nevada a 39-37 victory.

The final meet of the day saw the Trojans pick up a 45-36 victory over Boone, buoyed by pins from JD Downs (126) and Vellinga early on. Pfantz and Nason got pins for the third meet in a row, with Nason completing his win in 49 seconds.

Up next for the Trojans is the Corky Stuart Invitational at BGM on Saturday.
