PREP WRESTLING: STC wins Highland Tournament

RIVERSIDE — The South Tama County Trojans wrestling team emerged victorious from the Highland tournament held in Riverside Saturday. The Trojans scored 173 team points, beating out Muscatine by 7.5 points for the title.

The Trojans got started at 106 pounds with a third-place finish from MaCael Bear, who went 2-1 and beat Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union’s Ty Scorpil with a 6-4 decision in the consolation match.

Amare Chavez at 120 pounds finished third after defeating Wilton’s Lucas Dora with a 6-4 decision.

Logan Arp, the state’s No. 5 wrestler at 132 pounds, lost in his championship match to Class 1A No. 1 Aidan Noonan of Cascade to a 7-0 decision but finished second in the bracket. Boden Koehler won his consolation match at 160 pounds over Mason Schau of Fort Madison, coming in third place via a 12-6 decision.

Payton Vest finished in third place at 170 pounds. The No. 5-ranked 170-pounder in Class 2A, Vest pinned Boden Pickle of New London in 1:12 after losing in the semi-finals to Class 1A No. 4 Aidan Udell of Iowa City Regina.

Brayden Smith finished atop the 182-pound bracket as the Class 2A No. 8 pinned Mid-Prairie’s Ben Meader in 1:04 in the championship match.

At 220 pounds, Kalem Schrock pinned Kolby Morris of Alburnett in 1:46 to seal a third-place finish. It helped cap off a strong day for the Trojans.

BCLUW/South Hardin host Storm Duals

CONRAD — The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling program finished with a 1-2 record over the weekend at the Storm Duals, falling short to Newman Catholic and South Hamilton before beating Southeast Polk.

In the first dual — a 36-33 defeat to Newman Catholic — SH-BCLUW got a pin from Kade Pekarek at 182 pounds, beating Nash Holmgaard in 1:19. At heavyweight, Aiden Farnsworth defeated Henry Deteman of Newman Catholic in 1:05.

The second defeat, a 57-24 defeat at the hands of South Hamilton, was light on highlights for SH-BCLUW. Three of the four wins were forfeits, but at 106 pounds Chance Cordes pinned his counterpart Holden Klein in 5:06.

SH-BCLUW got on the board with a win over Class 3A Southeast Polk, 45-25. The team’s Class 2A No. 3-ranked 113 pound wrestler, Carter Kolthoff, started off the dual with a pin of Drew Denotter in 1:58 while wrestling at 120 pounds. Lane Hartwig got a 9-4 decision over Easton Biladeau at 126 pounds. At 132, Javon Darden pinned Dallas McAllister in 3:06. Kade Pekarek picked up another pin at 182 pounds over Caleb Chebuhar in 1:23, and it was followed by a Zach Bennett pin at 195 pounds, Caden Sterling getting a pin at 220 pounds and Farnsworth capping off the win with a pin of his own at heavyweight.

D-NH/G-R goes 2-1 in Wolverine Duals

DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford/Glabdrook-Reinbeck wrestling team scored two dual wins as the host of the Wolverine Duals Saturday, including a clean 69-0 sweep of Rockford (four falls, one decision and six forfeits).

The first dual was D-NH/G-R’s only loss of the day, a 48-27 loss to Hudson, and it was highlighted by three pins for D-NH/G-R: Lucas Ragsdale over Brody King at 106 pounds, Ty Deering over Carter Boeding at 132 pounds and Nick Reinicke at 160 pounds over Jack Christianson (in 42 seconds). Hudson largely controlled the rest of the dual on the way to a win.

Oelwein was dispatched 54-21 by D-NH/G-R. Class 2A No. 5 heavyweight Jacob Leohr defeated Christian Stoler via a 1-0 decision, and then D-NH/G-R picked up six pins in the next seven matches.

At 126, Dylan Ohrt pinned Chris Platter. Deering picked up a pin over Gavin Emery at 132 pounds and Cole Engel pinned Nolan Lamphier in 3:40 at 138 pounds. After an Oelwein win, another stretch of three straight D-NH/G-R pins — from Jace Hall at 152 pounds, Reinicke at 160 and Zach Adelmund at 170 to end the meet. Then came the complete wipeout of Rockford to end the day.
