SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans split Heart of Iowa triangular

STATE CENTER — West Marshall wrestling was on either side of two nail-biting matches in a triangular meet with Greene County and Roland-Story Tuesday night.

The Trojans started the night with a one-point victory over Greene County, defeating the Rams 43-42. Caden Vellinga pinned Jackson Turner of Greene County at 132 pounds and Austin Pfantz pinned James Currier at 170. The Trojans got the rest of their points via forfeits and won via forfeit criteria after an initial tie.

Against Roland-Story, JD Downs picked up the team’s first points via technical fall over Colin Streit at 126. A 29-second pin of Dylan Kahl from Cael Pfantz gave West Marshall new life midway through the meet, quickly followed by a 5:59 pin from Austin Pfantz at 170, taking down Eli Thorson with one second remaining.

Grant Nason won via major decision at 182, and Wyatt Weuve (195 pounds) and Sam Schaper (220) picked up pins of their own to put West Marshall ahead. But two Roland-Story pins later and things were tied, with the Norsemen winning via forfeit criteria.

The Trojans hit the mat Friday for the Heart of Iowa Conference meet held at Greene County.
