Wildcats sweep visiting Wolverines

JANESVILLE — The GMG girls’ basketball team jumped out to an early lead before Janesville caught up and caught fire in a 37-25 victory on Monday night.

The host Wildcats (3-10) outscored the Wolverines (2-8) by a 34-15 margin over the final three periods, paced by Pyper McCarville’s game-high 17 points. Kamryn Umthum came through with another 14 points for Janesville.

GMG was led by Adelyn Sienknecht’s seven points. Angel Schewe finished with six points, Emily Vaughn had five and Jenna Yilek added four.

The Wolverines are back on the road tonight with an Iowa Star Conference South Division contest at Valley Lutheran in Cedar Falls.

BOYS

Janesville 81, GMG 56

JANESVILLE — Wiley Sherburne scored a game-high 31 points and Joey Carlson added 18 more to lead the Janesville boys’ basketball team past GMG in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference battle.

The host Wildcats (11-1) had a double-digit lead at halftime, 36-25, and stretched it to 25 after three quarters to cruise to the win.

Zach Krull scored a career-high 20 points to lead GMG (6-4). Avery Bryant added 14 points to the cause, while Jabari Woodbury and Austin Vaverka contributed six points. Brenden Becker pitched in with five points in the loss.

GMG visits Valley Lutheran for an Iowa Star Conference South Division game tonight in Cedar Falls.
