MCC men outrun Northeast in shootout

NORFOLK, Neb. — A dominant first half performance helped the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team to a third straight win Saturday afternoon.

On the road against Northeast, the Tigers scored 65 points in the first half on the way to a 106-87 win over the Hawks. The Tigers are now 3-1 on the season, the Hawks 1-2.

Saturday’s win was kickstarted by consistent offensive play across the board, as five different MCC players reached double-digits and the team shot 50.7 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from 3-point range.

The Tigers were led by Deon’ta Lagway once again, as he scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. He added four assists and four steals.

Jaylin Scott, Nuha Sangia and David Roberts Jr. all scored 16 points apiece for the Tigers, shooting a combined 19-for-29 from the floor in the process. Sangia shared the team lead in rebounds with nine, while Di’Ablo Stewart scored 14 points and dished out a team-high nine assists.

The Tigers were able to coast through the second half despite giving up 47 points to the Hawks thanks to their strong offensive play.

Up next for MCC is a road trip Wednesday to play Ellsworth CC.

MCC women suffer second-straight blowout loss

NORFOLK, Neb. — It’s now two straight games to forget for the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team.

The Tigers failed to create offense in a 97-41 loss to Northeast CC (3-1, 3-1 ICCAC) Saturday that knocked them back to 1-3 on the season. The Tigers scored just 14 points in the first half, putting themselves in a 49-14 hole at the halftime break. MCC proceeded to be outscored 48-27 in the second half to add to the poor afternoon. It’s the second straight game the Tigers have been held to 41 points on offense.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Eva Zaragoza, who scored 14 points and was the only MCC player to reach double-figures. She added a team-high five rebounds. The Tigers were outrebounded 41-21 by Northeast.

Heeni Blakey scored nine points and Nuria Castillo added six. MCC shot 28.6 percent from the floor and hit 8-of-31 3-point attempts.

MCC goes back out on the road Wednesday night to Iowa Falls for a showdown with Ellsworth CC.
