Marshalltown Community College’s men’s basketball program is putting a very promising season on pause for at least the next 10 days, MCC athletic director John Kriebs confirmed Wednesday night.

The Tigers were scheduled to host Iowa Community College Athletic Conference foe and NJCAA Division I No. 9 Indian Hills on Wednesday night, but the game was listed as “canceled” on the team’s website along with the Feb. 20 road game against Iowa Central.

Kriebs said there were “some” positive tests within the program in a statement provided to the Times-Republican.

“We did not want to take any chances so we have decided to quarantine the team and get everyone tested before we will resume play,” Kriebs said. “This is to prevent contact due to being near others for an extended period of time.”

None of the people within the program who have tested positive have had severe symptoms so far, Kriebs said.

The Tigers don’t know for sure when they will be back in action, but Kriebs provided the best-case scenario.

“We will quarantine/isolation those that have been exposed or tested positive until we are given the all-clear,” Kriebs said. “We are hopeful that the team will be released in approximately 10 days. This will depend on test results.”

A 10-day period would put the Tigers’ next possible game as the Feb. 27 game at Iowa Lakes CC or the March 3 game at home against Kirkwood CC.

Kriebs commended the coaches and the athletic training staff of Savannah Fowler and Mike Jones for their cooperation.

The Tigers are in the midst of an incredibly strong start to the season, winning seven of their first eight games and receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I poll. MCC sits tied atop the ICCAC standings with Indian Hills. Both teams are 7-1.
