MHS girls bowling falls at districts

IOWA CITY — Marshalltown girls’ bowling left Iowa City frustrated Tuesday afternoon after the Bobcats’ season came to an end at the Class 3A regional hosted by Iowa City West.

The Bobcats finished fifth out of six teams at the highly competitive regional, besting the host team by over 250 pins with a score of 2,453. The number was not far off from the score that won the Bobcats the CIML Iowa Conference meet last week, but it left them 267 short of champions Iowa City High. City High scored 2,720 and finished with three top-10 individual scores.

Leading the way for MHS in her final meet as a Bobcat was Kylee Witt, one of the team’s four senior faces. Witt rolled a 187-180–367 to finish first on the team and ninth in the individual standings.

Senior Emily Diggins was second on the team, rolling 156-189–345. Madison Pickett, a sophomore, was third on the team with 145-180–325. Autumn Thompson rolled 169-145–314, and a third senior in Jordan May rounded out the counted scores with 146-152–298. Diana Espinoza, who was in and out of the varsity lineup with Thompson, was the fourth senior on this season’s team. Junior Sydney Dannen finished with 147-140–287.

The Bobcat girls are now in a state of flux, as there are only three returning players for next season at the moment. Witt said during the season she hopes the Bobcat bowlers will be able to convince others at the school to go out for the sport and make sure MHS can field a team next season.

Witt will bowl at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge next year.

The individual champion in the regional was Bettendorf’s Ammiah Wynn, who bowled a 226-235–461 to take home the first-place medal. Elyse Rios of City High finished second with 244-185–429 and Marissa Bills of Linn-Mar came in third with a score of 225-193–418.
