Mustangs and Trojans tally three qualifiers each

WILLIAMSBURG — The East Marshall/GMG and South Tama County wrestling teams both emerged with three state qualifiers from Saturday’s Class 2A District 8 tournament at Williamsburg High School, while South Hardin-BCLUW and West Marshall were surprisingly shut out in their quest to reach Wells Fargo Arena this week.

East Marshall/GMG’s two ranked wrestlers — second-ranked Dom Ridout at 126 pounds and No. 4 Conner Murty at 220 — will be joined by Samuel Bandstra at 170 as all three Mustangs claimed district titles.

South Tama’s lone district champion was Brayden Smith at 195, while fourth-ranked Logan Arp at 132 and unranked heavyweight Rudy Papakee collected runner-up finishes for the Trojans.

South Tama had nine district qualifiers, East Marshall/GMG had eight, while both SH-BCLUW and West Marshall had three.

Ridout (22-1) pinned Carter Straw of Independence in 3:33 in their championship match, Bandstra (24-9) beat Mitch Johnson of Independence by an 11-7 decision, and Murty (30-1) decked Korver Hupke of Independence in 2:46.

Arp (18-6) was pinned by top-ranked Brandon O’Brien of Independence, but a wrestleback was not required for Arp to advance to state for the second-straight year. Smith (25-6) scored an 8-6 decision over West Marshall’s Grant Nason in the 195 title bout, and Marcus Beatty of Independence edged Nason 10-9 for the final state berth. Papakee (24-9) battled to a 3-0 loss to third-ranked Kamrin Steveson of Grinnell, and Papakee came back to stake his claim to his first state berth with a 6-1 wrestleback victory over Oelwein’s Christian Stoler.

North Tama denied state

BROOKLYN — North Tama’s pair of Class 1A District 2 qualifiers came away with third place in their respective four-man brackets as the Redhawks were denied advancement to the state wrestling tournament.

Case Monat finished his season with a 25-5 record, falling to Belle Plaine’s Brayden Peterson in the semifinals. Monat came back to beat Jack Marshall of Iowa Valley in the consolation final, but the freshman didn’t get the chance to wrestle back after Peterson was pinned by No. 8 Caleb Coffin of Don Bosco in the finals.

Redhawk senior Xander Bradley closed with a 23-6 record, falling to Aiden McFadden of Baxter in the semifinals before beating Montezuma’s Kennen Roadcap by fall in the consolation round. McFadden was pinned by No. 6 Mack Ortner of Don Bosco in the finals, leaving Bradley without an opportunity to wrestle back.
