SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels run rampant on West Central

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team opened its postseason with a 77-19 triumph over West Central on Monday night.

The Rebels (15-3) opened District 5 play by leading the visiting Blue Devils (4-18) by a 25-2 margin in the first quarter. G-R was in front 42-11 by halftime.

William Kiburis led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a game-high 20 points, and Dylan Riffey made four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. Tristen Sanford-Anders added 13 points to the mix, and Danny Gleissner contributed 12 points off the bench for the Rebels.

Aidan Nelson paced West Central with nine points.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck advances to host Tripoli (13-8) in Thursday’s district semifinals, entertaining the Panthers in a 7 p.m. game. Dunkerton (17-5) hosts Maquoketa Valley (11-11) in the other district semifinal.

North Tama 43, Baxter 41

BAXTER — Jared Dvorak was used sparingly for North Tama’s boys’ basketball team in three games against Baxter this season.

But when he had the opportunity to bury the Bolts and end their season, Dvorak nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to send the Redhawks to a 43-41 win in Class 1A District 10 first-round action.

North Tama lost by 15 points in each of its first two games against the Bolts, but the Redhawks rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to win on Monday night.

They scored the first eight points of the third to get back into the game. Baxter went up three on a Cody Damman 3-pointer with 1:26 to go. It went back-and-forth from there before Dvorak delivered the dagger.

Dvorak scored just two points combined in the first two games against Baxter and the game-winning triple was his only points of the Monday’s contest.

The Bolts (13-8) held North Tama’s best player, Gabe Kopriva, to six points, but Devin McKinley had 14 points, five rebounds and five steals and Adam Greiner had 11 and eight rebounds. Thomas Hulme chipped in nine points and eight boards.

North Tama (9-13) won the game despite shooting 35 percent from the floor and 4-of-21 from 3-point range. The Redhawks also were 5-of-12 from the foul line and committed 23 turnovers.

But North Tama’s defense held Baxter to its second lowest point total of the season.

The Redhawks next play Meskwaki Settlement School in the district semifinals at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Meskwaki Settlement.
