Bobcat boys claim crown at Lincoln Invitational

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown Bobcats took home a first-place team finish at the Bob VanderLinden/Lincoln Invitational Thursday evening, collecting 104 team points and beating Fort Dodge by 23 in the final standings.

The Bobcats were led by two victories apiece from distance runner Conner Smith and Dwight Joar, who won in the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. Joar ran the hurdles in 17.05 seconds and reached 5 feet, 8 inches in the high jump to take those crowns. Smith took home titles in the 1,600 (4:49.51) and the 3,200 (10:08.81). The Bobcats picked up individual wins in the 200 from Deonte Dean (22.8 seconds) and Aidan DeVolder in the discus toss with a total distance of 129-5.

In the relays, Marshalltown took home four first-place finishes. The first of those came in the shuttle hurdle relay, where Joar, Keaghan Gorsuch, Ethan Schmidt and Aaron Seberger completed the relay in 1:10.47. In the distance medley relay, Mannie Kparyea, Jayzek Lee, Athonieh Kopsa and Marshall Weeden came home with a time of 3:56.77. In the weightmans’ 4×100 relay, Gannon Williams, David Santacruz, Ethan Wertzberger and DeVolder ran a 53.79 second time to pip Fort Dodge for the win. The 4×400 relay of Jaiden Buchanan, Weeden, Kopsa and Dean blitzed to a victory with a time of 3:38.43.

The Bobcats added individual second-place finishes from Malachi Holmes in the long jump and Dean in the 100 dash. The 4×100 relay of Holmes, Buchanan, Kparyea and Dean came in second with a time of 45.05. The 4×200 relay consisting of Buchanan, Seberger, Holmes and Christian Wells finished second in 1:38.80.
