The Hawks made the right adjustments and pulled out a 9-2 victory against the Bobcats (1-8), although the final score belied the tight margins present in multiple matches.

In singles, only Emily Diggins took home a win for Marshalltown. Diggins won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 against Sophie Laib. Brianna Hargrave lost 6-1, 6-0 to Mya Brumm and Kaitlyn Tiernan lost to Sydney Otto 6-0, 6-2. Rebekah Downs again showed her ability to fight when she’s trailing before falling 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to Rachel Rolow. Regan Smith fell 6-4, 6-4 to Anna Schmitz and Cass Lecompte was defeated 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) by Megan Sommerfeld.

Head coach John Fiscus said the weather made a difference, but despite the lopsided final score he’s seeing improvement from his team.

“Each night out on the courts there is a learning curve for the team, and we are seeing that our practices are helping,” Fiscus said. “I have to remember we are young and are improving, even if the final score doesn’t show it. Coach [Chad] Spear and I see a lot of good in our girls.

“At some point it is going to click so we need to be patient.”

In doubles, Grace Bethel and Chesni Uhde lost 6-4, 7-5 to Tori Johnson and Lauren Osburn. Claire Bohan and Taylor Jones came close, falling in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 0-1. Hargrave and Diggins were beat by Brumm and Laib 6-0, 6-1. Downs and Tiernan were beaten by Sommerfeld and Rolow by the exact same score of 6-0, 6-1. But Lecompte and Smith battled with Schmitz and Otto, winning set one 7-6 on a tiebreaker and then finishing off the win 6-3.

Marshalltown is at home Tuesday afternoon against Fort Dodge.
