Ex-Hawkeye Nunge picks Xavier hoops

Jack Nunge

CINCINNATI — University of Iowa men’s basketball player Jack Nunge, who has experienced more than his share of adversity over the past year, has found a new home with Xavier University.

Nunge, a 6-foot-11 forward from Newburgh, Ind., announced his transfer plans through his social media on Friday.

“What a journey it has been over the last year and a half,” Nunge wrote in an Instagram post. “I haven’t given up on my dream, and I trust things are going exactly the way they’re supposed to. Beyond excited to announce that I will be attending Xavier University!”

Plagued by injuries, Nunge spent four years at Iowa, but only played two seasons. As a freshman in 2017-18, Nunge played in 33 games for the Hawkeyes and averaged 5.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and shot 33 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (19-for-57).

Nunge used a redshirt the following season (2018-19), then suffered a torn ACL five games into the 2019-20 campaign. This winter, Nunge was averaging 7.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 15.7 minutes in 22 games as Luka Garza’s backup when he suffered a season-ending torn meniscus injury in his right knee in a loss at Michigan on Feb. 25.

Nunge missed the Hawkeyes’ last seven games, and he also missed time early in the season after his father, Dr. Mark Nunge, passed away at 53.

Nunge twice was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
