MCC softball splits twinbill with Ellsworth

IOWA FALLS — After moving up games to Tuesday afternoon due to the threat of possible rain on Wednesday, the Marshalltown Community College softball team split a doubleheader with the Ellsworth CC Panthers, 5-1 and 0-3.

The Tigers (5-25) took advantage of a four-run fourth inning to take game one of the doubleheader, tacking on a run in the fifth inning and giving starting pitcher Bailey Ashton breathing room. Leading the way at the plate for the Tigers was Aspyn Harrison, who recorded three hits, a double and an RBI. Sydney Hakkenson drove in two runs with a single in the fourth inning. Reagan McIlrath stole two bases.

Ashton threw a complete game despite giving up 10 hits, holding the Panthers to one run and striking out eight batters.

The second game was not a positive result for the Tigers, with the Panthers scoring two runs in the third inning and adding an insurance run in the fifth to seal the 3-0 final scoreline.

The Tiger bats went cold, only connecting for seven hits and not crossing home plate. McIlrath again stole two bases to lead the Tigers.

Kodie Hoskey took the loss for MCC, throwing a complete game and giving up 11 hits, three runs and three walks. She struck out four batters.

The Tigers visit DMACC on Friday.
