MHS golfers get out to strong start

ANKENY — Amber Henson birdied the first hole of the Marshalltown High School girls’ golf season and the Bobcats went on to defeat host Ankeny 187-204 in Tuesday’s CIML dual meet at Otter Creek Golf Course.

“To finally get our girls back on the course and in competition mode against another school was a welcome feeling,” said MHS coach Lucas Johnson. “There were some pre-meet nerves, which is to be expected given how long it’s been since we last played as a Bobcat squad, but our girls performed admirably given the windy conditions and how exposed Otter Creek is to the elements.”

Henson had another birdie during her medalist round of 2-over-par 38 to lead the Bobcats to victory in the first competitive golf meet for either team since the spring of 2019.

“Amber Henson got us off to a great start with a birdie on the first hole of the season and put on a short game clinic the rest of the way, recording only 12 putts in her nine holes,” Johnson said.

MHS senior Kyra Feldman finished out with a 48, as did junior Brynn Van Buren, and fellow junior Norah Wilson closed out the team total with her 53. Autumn Thompson’s score of 59 did not count toward the final tally.

Ankeny’s Jaci Webb was the meet’s runner-up with her 44.

The Bobcat girls play their first home meet on Thursday, entertaining Ankeny Centennial in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Elmwood Country Club.
