MASON CITY — The opportunity to start a winning streak went down to the last match on Thursday as the Marshalltown girls’ tennis team tussled with Mason City.

The host Mohawks outlasted the Bobcats by winning the last match on the court, as Mason City prevailed 6-5 in the CIML Iowa Conference dual.

The two teams split singles play and Mason City (3-1) got the better of the Bobcats (1-6) in doubles play, thanks to the last match of the meet. Mason City’s Emily Read and Ashley Latham picked up the pivotal win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Marshalltown’s Emily Diggins and Grace Bethel 6-4, 6-3.

The Bobcats fought just to stay within one match of the Mohawks, winning both third-set super-tiebreakers during singles competition. Rebekah Downs, a freshman, rallied for a 0-6, 6-2, (10-8) triumph at No. 3 over Chloe Callanan, while Diggins defeated Read at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 3-6, (12-10).

“I am very proud of the way the girls competed tonight,” said MHS head coach John Fiscus. “We had chances to win the meet but fell short. The girls are improving every day.”

Marshalltown junior Cassandre Lecompte claimed a hard-fought triumph at No. 1 singles, edging Tiegan Barkema 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles action, Claire Bohan and Taylor Jones tallied a straight-set victory at No. 4 doubles, while Chesni Uhde and Rylie McMullen were winners at No. 5 doubles as well.

The Bobcats are back home on Tuesday, hosting Class 2A No. 8 Johnston in at 4 p.m. dual.
