No. 9 Bobcats sweep aside Bulldogs

OTTUMWA — The Class 2A No. 9 Marshalltown boys’ tennis team went slightly shorthanded into Tuesday’s road match at Ottumwa, but the Bobcats didn’t allow it to make an impact.

The MHS boys bagged their fifth-straight win with their fourth shutout of the season, strolling to an 11-0 triumph over the host Bulldogs.

Even without No. 2 singles player Jason Strand in the lineup, there wasn’t a cascading effect anywhere below the No. 1 position. Kevin Strand improved to 7-0 at No. 1 singles and the rest of the Bobcats brought in the wins as well for a decisive sweep.

Nic Price stepped up to the No. 2 spot and scored a straight-set victory over Matthew Nderi, 6-1, 6-2, and Ethan Benscoter triumphed by the same score on the next rung down the lineup. Drake Davis powered out a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4, while Nile Christensen and John Loney survived third-set tiebreakers to complete the singles sweep.

Strand and Christensen endured the tightest of Marshalltown’s five doubles wins, pairing together for a 7-5, 6-3 win over Toby Schmidt and Cale Leonard at No. 1 doubles. The rest of Marshalltown’s doubles victories were even more decisive.

The Bobcats are back in action Thursday with a home dual against Ankeny Centennial.
