SPORTS SHORTS: Comets lead local squads at Spartan Invite

GRUNDY CENTER — BCLUW junior Ray Callaway’s round of 86 was good for a top-10 finish at Grundy Center’s 18-hole Spartan Invitational on Saturday at Town & Country Golf Club.

Callaway tied for the eighth-best round of the tournament to lead the Comets, who came in sixth out of eight teams with their 377 total. Kade Pekarek shot a 94, Mason Martin carded a 95 and Gus Callaway’s 102 rounded out the Comets’ team scoring.

GMG was seventh with its 455 team total, led by Zach Duncan’s 107. Dylan Cooper (110), Kooper (114) and Ayden Kelley (124) also scored for the Wolverines.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s 493 team total came in eighth. Trey Eggeres paced the Rebels with his 119, followed by Isaac Baer (124), Kadyn Schick (125) and Austin Gehring (125).

Grundy Center took the team title with its 316, led by medalist Ashton Martens and his 1-over-par round of 73 and runner-up Dexter Whitehill’s 74.
