Bobcats beat Ames in home finale

Marshalltown girls’ golf continued its dominant run in CIML dual meets Wednesday afternoon, defeating area rival Ames 173-183 in a meet that was rescheduled from the previous week. This meet served as the Bobcats’ Senior Day, and varsity senior Kyra Feldman was honored for her contributions to the program.

Playing at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course instead of usual spot Elmwood Country Club, the Bobcats settled well at the course. In what is a routine occurrence this season, junior Amber Henson took home medalist honors with a 2-over-par 37 on the back nine. Henson made a birdie on the par-3 12th hole and made three bogeys in the last four holes of the round to end up over par.

The Little Cyclones brought Taylor Balsley and Megan Riesselman, both of whom made state last year as individual qualifiers. Balsley and Riesselman shot 39 and 38 to lead Ames in scoring and make it a close-fought meet.

But, coach Lucas Johnson said, it was the middle of the pack for Marshalltown that got the Bobcats the win — particularly Feldman in her final home meet and sophomore Autumn Thompson.

“On Senior Night in her final home meet, Feldman had a pair of birdies on 10 and 15 that were important in keeping her round together,” Johnson said. “I can’t say enough good things about Thompson, who came through with her first counting score as a varsity player. As a newcomer to competitive golf, it was great to see her experience the benefits of all the work she’s put in with her lowest round to date.”

Feldman finished her round with a 43, while Thompson was the fourth and final counting score after shooting a 12-over 47. Also scoring was Brynn Van Buren, who shot an 11-over 46 to continue her streak of scoring in every meet of the season. Ames’ next counting score was a 54.

WIth the regular season winding down, Johnson said Van Buren’s short game improvements were a good sign.

“We know that the short game is going to be critical,” Johnson said. “Brynn Van Buren in particular had some key up and downs in the closing holes when we knew the match was tightening.”
