Feldman’s career-low helps Bobcats to 2nd at SE Polk Invitational

Amber Henson and Kyra Feldman

PLEASANT HILL — Amber Henson finished in the top-five, Kyra Feldman carded her career-low round and the Marshalltown girls’ golf team finished second to West Des Moines Valley at Thursday’s Southeast Polk Invitational at Copper Creek Golf Club.

Henson, a junior, shot a 7-over-par round of 78 to lead the Bobcats, while Feldman wasn’t far behind in seventh place with her 81. Norah Wilson came in 13th with her round of 91, and Marshalltown got matching 101s from Brynn Van Buren and Autumn Thompson.

“Kyra Feldman was outstanding on the day, shooting her career low,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “She capped off her round by driving the par-4 18th green and leaving the eagle putt just inches from the hole for an easy birdie. She finished 1-under on her last three (holes), which can be a tough closing stretch given how tight the fairways are on that portion of the course.”

The Bobcats improved to 58-3 overall this season, trailing only Valley in three separate tournaments. The Tigers set themselves apart from the pack in this meet, shooting a 301 thanks to four of the day’s six lowest scores.

Marshalltown was ahead of the chase pack with a 351, pursued by Newton (356) and host Southeast Polk (360) in the 12-team event.

“After the round, we talked about the fact that we had a pair of 101s as the final counting score, which shouldn’t be overlooked either,” Johnson said. “In team golf you’re only as good as your fourth score. That reliability on the back end of the lineup is something that could be integral as we head down the stretch run of the season — especially when we might rely on a fifth score as a team tiebreaker in a close team race.”

The Bobcats get a breather to prepare for the CIML Iowa Conference meet, which will be played Wednesday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
