Garber grabs MVP honors at NICL West

LE GRAND — BCLUW senior Lizzie Garber was named the MVP of the NICL West Division as the Comet track and field team came in third out of sixth teams at Thursday’s conference meet hosted by East Marshall.

Garber won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.61 seconds, came in second in the 200 (27.63), and anchored a pair of relays to first-place results. Kenna Paxson, Anistyn Borsch-Rash, Emma Averill and Garber won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:11.22, and Garber’s finishing kick caught Grundy Center from behind to win the 4×400. Paxson, Fiona Speicher and Miranda Jones combined with Garber for a time of 4:25.13 to win the final event.

Paxson won the 100 (13.86) and finished second to Garber in the 100 hurdles (17.21), while Mallori Jones came in fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:21.65). Kailan McEwen was fourth in the shot put (30 feet, 5 3/4 inches).

The Comets placed third in the 4×200 relay and the sprint medley while taking fourth in the distance medley and the 4×100.

East Marshall placed fourth out of six teams, powered by MKenzie Robinson and Ellie Hull placing first and second, respectively, in both the 1,500 and 3,000. Morgan Neuroth won the 400 hurdles, while Hull placed second in the 800.

Addie Lane added a third-place finish in the long jump (14-4), and Callyn Curphy scored fourth in the discus (72-6). The Mustangs were third in the 4×100, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relays.

A bulk of Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s points came from Belen Ellenberger, as the senior edged Garber by four-hundredths of a second to win the 200 (27.59), won the long jump (16-2 1/2) and placed fourth in the 400 (1:06.06). Xandra Anderson claimed third place in the discus (81-5), while Madison Resendez was sixth in the long jump. Phoenix Wheeland was sixth in the 100.

Grundy Center won the NICL West girls team title with 167 points, well ahead of AGWSR (112). BCLUW (100), East Marshall (96), South Hardin (68) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (33) rounded out the field.
