Henson’s medalist round helps Bobcats to 4th at Waukee Invite

Amber Henson

GRIMES — Marshalltown High School junior Amber Henson shot a 1-over-par round of 73 at Beaver Creek Golf Club on Monday to earn medalist honors and help guide the Bobcat girls’ golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Waukee Invite.

Henson shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine thanks to a trio of birdies and finished in with a 3-over 39 to achieve medalist status. She defeated Anna Nacos of Washington and Saffire Sayre of West Des Moines Valley by one stroke for the top spot.

Valley shot three of the day’s best five rounds and rolled to the team title with a 315 total. Washington was second at 330, followed by Van Meter (367), Marshalltown (370), Ames (376) and Southeast Polk (379) in the 13-team tournament.

“Amber Henson played a great front nine with three birdies on the side,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “The trees at Beaver Creek come into play on almost every hole and she had some great par saves down the stretch from difficult spots to come out on top against a highly talented field of golfers.”

For the Bobcats, Norah Wilson placed 24th overall with her round of 96, and Kyra Feldman carded a 98 for 30th place. Brynn Van Buren closed out the team scoring with her 103, and Autumn Thompson contributed a 109.

“Team-wise, the front nine was a struggle — especially the par 5s,” Johnson said. “None of our girls had seen the course before, which played a factor, but we know we need to do a better job of keeping the ball out of trouble.

“The biggest positive on the day was our strong comeback on the back nine. One of the team stats we track is how players score on their final three holes of the round and as a team this was our best finish this season.”

Marshalltown shot a 192 over the front nine and a 178 on the back.

The Bobcats close out their dual meet schedule today at Fort Dodge with a 3:30 p.m. match at Fort Dodge Country Club.
