Huffman, Rasmusson hit PRs to power MHS to 3rd

CEDAR RAPIDS — Marshalltown’s Sara Huffman and Mia Rasmusson set new personal-records on their way to first-place finishes at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Relays on Monday night.

Huffman ran a personal-best time of 16.91 seconds to win the 100-meter hurdles on the track, while Rasmusson cleared 5 feet in the high jump for the first time in her prep career to win in the field.

Rasmusson also ran a personal-best 17.40 to finish third in the 100 hurdles, while Valeria Becerra was fifth in the same race with a time of 17.72.

Marshalltown placed third out of four teams at the meet with 122 points, just back of Cedar Rapids Xavier (128) in second. Host Cedar Rapids Prairie won the team title with 218 points, while Cedar Rapids Washington was fourth (50).

In addition to their two event titles, the Bobcats collected seven runner-up finishes on the track and in the field. Lilly Duff placed second in both the shot put and the discus, heaving the shot 29-10 and the discus 98 feet. Klaudia Hernandez was fourth in the discus (91-11) and sixth in the shot (27-7).

Micah Blevins scored silver in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.11, and four Marshalltown relays earned runner-up results. The 4×800 foursome of Grace Rasmussen, Lydia Blevins, Sydney Hotchkiss and Makenna Ainsworth totaled a time of 11:10.77, while the distance medley quartet of Kendall See, Claire Hughes, Alyvia Williams and Rachel Smith clocked in at 4:58.32.

The Bobcats’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Rasmusson, Lily Roberts, Becerra and Huffman totaled a time of 1:12.36, trailing Prairie by just 26-hundreths of a second, and the 4×100 contingent of Ava Augustine, Katelyn Stowe, Kate Jones and Grace Collins crossed the finish line in 54.72.

Smith and Rasmussen finished 3-4 in the 1,500, and Marshalltown’s sprint medley relay squad of Augustine, Jolcey Santana, Carlye Castillo and Mya Gallegos got third in 2:07.73. The Bobcats’ 4×200 unit of Zoe Boydstun, Zaniah Stokes, Thalia Gallegos and Leticia Herrera ran a time of 2:14.02 for fourth place.

Marshalltown runs in the CIML Iowa Conference meet today at Mason City.
