SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats fall to Hoover in Nevada title match

NEVADA — The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team advanced to the finals of the Nevada Tournament on Saturday before falling to Des Moines Hoover 1-0 in the championship match.

The Bobcats beat Gilbert 5-0 in the first round and Class 1A No. 2 Iowa City Regina 2-0 in the semifinals, but couldn’t break through against Hoover (9-7) in the title bout.

Ben Musengo scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the second half on an assist from Reese Rubino to propel the team to victory. Aung Leh faced just two shots on goal and stopped both of them for Hoover.

No Marshalltown statistics were available as of press time.

The Bobcats (7-8) host Ankeny on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field, and Fort Dodge visits on Friday at 7 p.m.

Rebels sweep competition at Vinton-Shellsburg

VINTON — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ soccer team went 2-0 to win the Vinton-Shellsburg Tournament on Saturday.

The Rebels (6-7) defeated Vinton-Shellsburg 3-1 and Anamosa 6-1 to take the three-team tournament title.

Reece Gordan tallied two goals and an assist, and Jada Blohm added a goal to help the Rebels defeat the tournament host Vikings in the opener. Jacque Kuester and Karlie Rickert both assisted on Gordan goals for GC/G-R, while Makenzie Martens made 10 saves in net for the victory.

Kuester recorded a hat trick with three goals against Anamosa, and Gordan got two goals in the runaway win for the Rebels. Delaney Petersen picked up the other goal. Katie Clark recorded two assists, while Martens tallied five saves in the win.

The GC/G-R girls go to Dike-New Hartford on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest before traveling to the Waverly-Shell Rock Tournament next Saturday.
