SPORTS SHORTS: Hassin helps Mustangs handle Gladbrook-Reinbeck
REINBECK — Connor Hassin pitched five strong innings and had three hits as East Marshall baseball team beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck 11-2 in Monday’s NICL West Division matchup.
Hassin allowed two unearned runs on four hits over his five innings, striking out six for the win. The Mustangs (6-6, 3-2) backed him with the game’s first seven runs and he exited with a 7-2 lead. Wesley Hamor handled the final two frames, striking out four.
Hassin was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the East Marshall offense. Colton Robinson was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, and Jordan Swift finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Logan Bowie pitched in a two-run double and scored twice.
Logan Giesking took the loss for the Rebels (6-7, 2-3).
Ranked Eagles ease past West Marshall softball
DES MOINES — Class 3A No. 15 Saydel (11-5, 6-1) completed its regular-season sweep of the West Marshall softball team with a 13-0, three-inning triumph Monday in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
Saydel sophomore pitcher Dakota Lake allowed just two singles from the circle, walking one while striking out four. She also hit a two-run home run in the Eagles’ three-run first inning and was intentionally walked with the bases loaded in their 10-run second.
West Marshall’s hits came from Josie Zahnd and Kalyn Polley. The Trojans (5-10, 2-6) had runners on base in each of their three at-bats but couldn’t push them around to score.
Madeline Karsjen was the losing pitcher, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings. Bella Borgos gave up three runs on three hits while recording the final two outs.
