SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs edged out by Newton rally

LE GRAND — Newton used four-straight two-out hits in the top of the sixth inning to rally past the East Marshall softball team for a 5-4 victory on Saturday.

The Mustangs (5-7) had broken a 1-all tie with a three-run surge in the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive errors by the Cardinals allowed East Marshall to take a 3-1 lead, and Callyn Curphy greeted Newton’s relief pitcher with an RBI single to make it 4-1. Catelyn Fisher followed with a single, but that’s where the rally ended.

Newton (8-8) did the Mustangs one better with a four-run rally in the sixth, getting all four unearned after an error led off the at-bat. The heart of the Cardinals’ order got four consecutive run-scoring hits to take the lead for good.

Morgan Neuroth got the loss in the circle, giving up five unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Emma Pfantz pitched two innings of hitless relief.

Rayne McIlrath and Ellie Hull added singles for the Mustangs.
