SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall softball beats Ogden for first win

STATE CENTER — On Memorial Day, the West Marshall softball team took home a 9-4 victory in front of home fans against Ogden (1-7). The win is the first of the season for the Trojans, who are now 1-3.

Maddy Karsjen pitched all seven innings for West Marshall, striking out two and walking four. She allowed only two hits and one earned run. At the plate, Lauren Solberg led the way going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Josie Zahnd was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Madison Tarbell was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Trojan baseball team splits in trip to Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — The West Marshall baseball team went 1-1 at the Fort Dodge St. Edmond Tournament on Monday, falling to Newell-Fonda 4-3 in nine innings before beating the host Gaels 17-5 in the five-inning consolation game.

In the opener, Owen Siegert had two doubles, a single, and scored a run, and Dru Wilder rapped a three-run double in the Trojan’s three-run first. Newell-Fonda rallied to score once in the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth innings to win. Clay Cuva took the loss in relief of Siegert, allowing two hits and two runs — one earned — in three innings. He struck out two. Siegert pitched five frames and allowed four hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

West Marshall racked up six runs in the first inning and eight more in the third on its way to a victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Kinnick Christensen went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and four RBIs, Siegert was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Peyton Hart was 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs.

Grayson Shaver struck out three in three innings for the win, and Dylan Thompson pitched the last two innings.

BCLUW goes 1-1 in Memorial Day round-robin

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team split in its home tournament on Memorial Day, beating GMG before falling to North Tama in the unofficial championship game here Monday.

The Comets (1-2) edged GMG 6-5 in their first game of the day, getting out to a 6-2 lead and holding on for the win. Angus Callaway picked up the pitching win for his four innings of work, striking out three, and Grant Parker struck out four in the final three innings. Brayden Duden took the loss for the Wolverines.

Nick Feldpausch hit a two-run single to lead the BCLUW bats. Noah Gallentine had a single and a double, while Walker Ashton and Parker both contributed singles.

North Tama scored in five of six innings for a 17-6, run rule-shortened triumph in the final game. Colton Keller took the loss for the Comet pitching staff, which issued 13 walks and hit six batters. Keller’s three hits led the way for BCLUW. Tucker Wall, Ray Callaway, Hayden Schleisman, Gallentine and Parker each pitched in with a single for the Comets.

East Marshall softball splits at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — East Marshall softball had an up-and-down weekend at the Williamsburg Tournament, defeating West Branch 10-5 and falling to Pella Christian 7-6 in extra innings Saturday.

The Mustangs rapped out 13 hits to beat West Branch, as Rayne McIlrath went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the way. Winning pitcher Emma Pfantz was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Callyn Curphy was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Catelyn Fisher finished 2-for-3 with an RBI as well.

Pella Christian pushed across its winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to the international tiebreaker rule. The Eagles scored three times in the sixth to force extra innings because of the tournament’s time limit, and both teams scored once in the seventh. Morgan Neuroth pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out eight.

Fisher went 3-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam, and Neuroth went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.
