Bobcat netters winless at Johnston Invite

JOHNSTON — Marshalltown volleyball faced a difficult task on Saturday, going up against a group of metro schools in the Johnston Invite. The Bobcats lost all five matches they played and failed to win a set, dropping to 11-21 on the season.

In the first match, Class 5A No. 7 Urbandale routed the Bobcats 21-5, 21-17. Southeast Polk dispatched Marshalltown 21-13, 22-20 in the second round. The third match was against Ames, a team the Bobcats swept at the Roundhouse earlier in the season. On this occasion, the Little Cyclones had the upper hand with a 21-12, 21-7 win.

Tenth-ranked West Des Moines Valley swept the Bobcats 21-13, 21-8 in the fourth match of the day. The final matchup of the weekend for Marshalltown was against No. 9 Johnston, and the hosts won 21-14, 21-19.

Sophie Younkin led the Bobcats with 19 kills on the day. Autumn Finch had 17, while Kennedy Feldman contributed 10 and Ella Roush added seven. Khloe Shipley assisted on 39 kills.

Defensively, Younkin led the way with 27 digs. Finch also contributed with 15 digs, while Say Paw had 13 and Shipley added 12. Sara Huffman had 11 digs and Feldman had seven. Finch had half of the team’s blocks with three.

Up next for the Bobcats is a 5A Region 4 semifinal Thursday at No. 8 Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
