CASCADE — North Tama’s Grace Lidgett and Jules Breakenridge are going back to the Class 1A state cross country meet, and this time they’re taking reinforcements.

The Redhawks finished second at the 1A state-qualifying meet on Thursday at Fillmore Fairways Golf Course, qualifying as a team for next weekend’s state meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Two North Tama runners would have qualified individually had the whole team not advanced with its top-three finish. Lidgett finished in third place with her time of 20 minutes, 44.1 seconds, and Breakenridge was fifth in 21:38.1. Jamie Jacobs came in 12th in 22:41.6, Olivia Ketter scored 13th in 22:45.4, and Larissa Morrison represented the Redhawks’ final scoring runner in 37th (26:08.6).

North Tama notched 50 points to finish behind only fourth-ranked Hudson, which totaled 36 points, but ahead of No. 13 Central Community of Elkader, which compiled 59 points. BCLUW was too far back in fourth place with 89 and South Hardin was fifth with 120. Eleven other teams in the meet fielded incomplete lineups, including GMG and Meskwaki Settlement School.

The Meskwaki Warriors will be unable to duplicate last year’s state meet debut by Shye Johnson, as the senior who last year advanced to Fort Dodge came up four spots short of a return trip. Johnson placed 14th with her time of 22:48.1, and fellow senior Wakinyela Bear finished 15th in 22:55.8.

BCLUW was denied a state qualifier as freshman Kalia Stover clocked in at 23:18.2 for 17th place, while Abby Kemp came in 20th (23:41.2) and Emma Hoover was 21st (23:46.1). Fiona Speicher finished 26th overall in 24:13.4.

GMG was represented by sophomores Alice Hunt in 47th (28:43.4) and Lily Bru in 53rd (30:14.6).

Comets unable to advance

CASCADE — The BCLUW boys’ cross country team was unable to qualify for state after the Comets finished fourth at the Class 1A race at Fillmore Fairways Golf Course.

Fourth-ranked Valley Lutheran (44 points) and Cascade (67) advanced as team qualifiers while No. 17 Hudson (73) and BCLUW (115) were on the outside looking in. The same went for BCLUW junior Cayden McLeland, who placed 15th in a time of 19 minutes, 8.9 seconds, to lead the Comets. The top-10 individual finishers advanced to state.

GMG was 10th out of 11 teams with 262 points, while the Meskwaki and North Tama teams had only a handful of runners.

BCLUW freshman Cayden White was his team’s next closest competitor, taking 19th in a time of 19:28.

Zayton Weninger-Brown led Meskwaki in 27th place (19:55.5) and Dayvin Guevara finished 31st in 20:21.3.

GMG was paced by Noah Teske in 56th (22:09.3) and Grady Dieleman in 59th (22:33), while North Tama was represented by Christian Dronebarger in 63rd (22:52.4).

Mustangs make their way

WILLIAMSBURG — State powerhouses Mid-Prairie and Williamsburg left little room for anyone else, but East Marshall managed to make its mark just the same.

The Mustang boys qualified for state as a team and two East Marshall girls’ runners will represent their school at the Class 2A state cross country meet next weekend at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

West Marshall managed lone entrant as well as Nicholas Thompson qualified for a return run at state, placing third in a time of 17 minutes, 11.0 seconds, at Thursday’s state-qualifying meet.

Williamsburg (64) and Mid-Prairie (68) paced the boys field with East Marshall (79) heading the chase pack. Joe Terrones led the Mustangs in fifth place in 17:24.9, while Kaleb Grant also would have earned automatic qualification if the team hadn’t made it on its own merit. Grant finished 14th in 17:42.0.

On the girls’ side, East Marshall seniors Mkenzie Robinson and Ellie Hull have their spots at state reserved after finishing ninth and 11th, respectively, with times of 20:35.5 and 20:40.4 on Thursday evening.

The Mustangs were fifth out of 12 teams with 157 points, while West Marshall was sixth at 172. Top-ranked Mid-Prairie (18) had its top six runners finish inside the top 10. Williamsburg (56) and Albia (103) rounded out the automatic qualifiers.

West Marshall junior Emelia Hauser was her team’s top finisher, placing 18th in 21:14.5.
