MHS plows past Polars in finale

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown football team piled up 565 yards of total offense en route to a 63-32 triumph over Des Moines North in Friday’s regular-season finale.

The Bobcats (4-5) ended the season on their first three-game win streak since winning four straight to start 2019.

Nick Rebik ran seven times for 181 yards and touchdowns covering 56, 19 and 51 yards to lead the Bobcats to 394 yards of rushing offense. Dominick Garth had seven carries for 97 yards and one score while also catching two passes for 66 yards and two more touchdowns.

MHS quarterback Dalen Huston had seven totes for 81 yards and two TDs while also completing 6-of-13 passes for 171 yards. Gannon Williams made two grabs for 67 yards.

“It’s great how resilient they were after losing some tough games,” said MHS head coach Adam Goodvin. “Coming back for those final three games is not an easy thing to do for 16-, 17-, 18-year-olds. I told them how proud I was of them for that.

“Going 4-5 in this league is not an easy thing to do, and if we get eight more points we’re 6-3 and we’re playing next week (in the playoffs) which is obviously where we want to be.”

In a back-and-forth affair, Des Moines North (1-8) ran its way to 353 yards on the ground and 372 total yards. Israel Kelai carried 11 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns for the Polar Bears. Quarterback Nick Crispin had 15 carries for 72 yards and two scores.

Class 5A playoff pairings will be released Saturday, but the Bobcats are not expected to qualify.
