STC falls to Bulldogs in football finale

HAMPTON — South Tama’s lead over Hampton-Dumont-CAL was shortlived as the host Bulldogs scored 28 points in the second quarter to pull away from the Trojans, 48-13, in Friday’s Class 3A District 3 clash and regular-season football finale.

The Trojans (2-7, 1-4) took a 7-6 lead into the second period before Hampton-Dumont-CAL got loose for four touchdowns. The Bulldogs (5-4, 3-2) carried a 34-7 lead into the halftime break on their way into the 3A playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

The South Tama offense managed just 137 total yards. Quarterback Jacob Collison was 3-for-11 passing for 81 yards, which included a 69-yard touchdown pass to Kyler Smith. Boden Koehler led the Trojans with nine carries for 29 yards, while Gavin Bridgewater returned a kick 64 yards for a touchdown.

Bridgewater had 9.5 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the STC defense. Koehler had nine tackles and an interception, and Collison also had nine tackles.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL quarterback Cal Heeren finished 17-for-24 passing for 343 yards and four touchdowns, each to a different receiver. Tate Schmitt led the way with six grabs for 182 yards and a score.
