Trojans take 2nd in HOIC tournament

NEVADA — The West Marshall wrestling team finished second at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet here Friday night led by 170-pound champion Austin Pfantz.

Pfantz led the charge for the Trojans with two wins by fall to improve to 21-7 this season. He pinned South Hamilton’s Owen Duns in 1 minute, 5 seconds, and then flattened Roland-Story’s Eli Thorson in 5:54 for the championship.

All 12 West Marshall wrestlers to compete finished fourth or better. The Trojans scored 197 points to trail only Roland-Story (210) in the eight-team tournament. Greene County was third with 168 points.

West Marshall’s runner-up finishes went to Shane Hanford (106), Landin Eggers (113), JD Downs (132), Dillon McMorran (152) and Wyatt Weuve (195).

Hanford (26-3) used a technical fall of Greene County’s Gavyn Winters to reach the finals at 106, where he lost a 7-2 decision to Class 2A No. 9 Kaden Weber of Nevada.

Eggers was pinned in the 113 final by Roland-Story’s Kade Blume, the top-ranked 106-pounder according to IAwrestle.

Downs fell to 2A No. 2 McKinley Robbins of Greene County in the 132 title bout, losing by pinfall in 1:24.

McMorran lost a 14-3 major decision in the 152 championship match to Greene County’s 10th-ranked Gavin Scheuermann.

Finishing third for the Trojans were Luke Vawter (120), Colin Vellinga (126) and Caden Vellinga (138). Earning fourth were Miles Moore (145), Luke Coulter (160) and Grahm Nason (182).
