Comets qualify as regional runners-up

LYNNVILLE — The BCLUW girls’ golf team claimed second place by a comfortable margin to advance to state from Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 3 Final at Diamond Trail Golf Club.

The Comets shot a 392 to finish in second, trailing only Sigourney’s 371 total. Pleasantville was 14 shots back of BCLUW in third place with a 406.

South Hardin (410), Don Bosco (410), Montezuma (416) and Moravia (553) rounded out the final team standings.

BCLUW’s top finisher was Lindsay Beeghly, who finished in a tie for fifth place with a score of 88.

The top local finisher was North Tama senior Molly Vogeler, who qualified for state individually with her third-placed round of 79.

Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully scored the low round for the tournament with a 74, followed by runner-up Madelynn Hornback of Sigourney.

No other details were available as of press time.

The Class 1A girls’ state golf tournament will be held May 26-27 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Meyer makes it to state

Meyer qualified for the girls’ state golf tournament with the fifth-best overall score at Wednesday’s Class 2A Region 4 Final at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, but the host Trojans came up 15 strokes shy of advancing as a whole.

Williamsburg won the regional title with a 365 total and Van Meter was two shots off the pace at 367. West Marshall (382), Woodward-Granger (410), Albia (428) and South Hamilton (440) rounded out the team standings.

Meyer’s round of 91 qualified for state as one of the top six finishers at the regional final. Van Meter’s Shae Bernhardt won with an 84, and Teagan Schaefer of Williamsburg was the runner-up with the same score.

For the Trojans, Kalyn Polley finished two strokes back of the sixth and final individual spot after carding a 95. Lauren Solberg was oh so close as well with her 96, and Emma Stanley’s 100 rounded out the team scoring.

Meyer advances to the Class 2A state tournament, which will be held May 26-27 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.
