GIRLS GOLF: Comets capitalize on home-course advantage
UNION — The BCLUW girls’ golf team capitalized on its home-course advantage and came away from Friday’s Class 1A Region 3A tournament with a team title and a spot in next week’s regional finals.
The Comets shot a combined 390 to win the nine-team tournament, though only four teams had at least four golfers to count toward the final standings. South Hardin (427) and Don Bosco (434) also advanced to the regional finals, as North Tama (441) was left out of the next round.
North Tama senior Molly Vogeler advanced as an individual, however, by winning medalist honors on Friday at South Hardin Recreation Area. Vogeler and Sydney Anderson of BCLUW both shot 91, with Vogeler claiming top honors.
BCLUW’s team total came from Anderson’s 91, Maleah Jones’ 96, Brooklynn Backoff’s 98 and Lindsay Beeghly’s 105. Tatum Ridout (119) and Maggie Ward (128) also participated for the Comets.
GMG’s Mariah Wood earned another round of golf as well, finishing inside the top-six individually with her round of 98.
BCLUW, Vogeler and Wood will tee it up on Wednesday at Diamond Trail Golf Course in Lynnville in hopes of advancing to the 1A state tournament May 26-27 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
West Marshall advances with another school record
WILLIAMSBURG — The West Marshall girls’ golf team came up just four strokes shy of unseating host Williamsburg, but the Trojans advanced just the same with Friday’s runner-up team finish at the Class 2A Region 4B tournament at Stone Creek Golf Course.
Williamsburg shot a 364 to hold off West Marshall’s new school record 368, but both teams advanced to the regional finals just the same. Albia, which finished third with a 406, moved on as well due to the host school finishing in first or second.
West Marshall’s four scoring golfers all earned individual medals as well. Allie Pfantz placed third with a 90, Ella Meyer was fourth with her 91, Emma Stanley scored fifth with a 92, and Josi Zahnd tied for sixth with her 95.
Kalyn Polley (102) and Lauren Solberg (106) also participated for West Marshall.
East Marshall placed fifth in the final team standings with a 427 total. No individual scores for the Mustangs were available as of press time.
West Marshall advances to the 1A Region 4 final, which the Trojans will host next Wednesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course near State Center.
