SPORTS SHORTS: No. 6 Rebels advance to within one win of state soccer

REINBECK — Ethan Gienger scored four goals and the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team dispatched Pella Christian 9-1 in Monday’s Class 1A Substate 6 semifinal match.

The sixth-ranked Rebels (15-1) advance to face No. 13 West Liberty (12-3) in Wednesday’s substate final at 6:30 p.m. in Reinbeck. The Comets defeated Mid-Prairie 2-1 in their substate semifinal.

Tyler Nolder had two goals and four assists for GCGR, while Austin Betts also tallied two goals for the Rebels. Isaac Clark had a goal and three assists, and Aiden Hunemuller contributed two assists in the lopsided victory.

The winner of Wednesday’s substate final will advance to the state tournament on June 1 at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

Comets come up short against Grand View Christian

DES MOINES — The BCLUW baseball team had a shortlived lead in an eventual 12-2, six-inning loss to Grand View Christian on Monday at the Cownie Baseball Complex.

The Comets (0-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after consecutive singles by Cael Keller and Walker Ashton. Ray Callaway had a run-scoring single to help BCLUW to the early advantage.

Grand View Christian retaliated with four runs in the second inning and then its final eight runs in innings 4-6.

Angus Callaway took the loss for the Comet pitching staff, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one. Cayden McLeland allowed five unearned runs on four hits and two walks in two innings, striking out four. Keller finished with two hits, including a double, and Hayden Schleisman contributed a double as well for BCLUW. The Comets return to action Wednesday at home against East Marshall.

West Marshall pulls away from G-R baseball

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A preseason No. 6 West Marshall baseball team broke free from Gladbrook-Reinbeck for a 10-1 victory on Monday night.

The Rebels (0-5) led 1-0 after the top of the first, but the host Trojans (4-2) tied it up immediately in the home half. West Marshall piled on with six runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth.

Kinnick Christensen struck out seven over five innings for the win, allowing two hits, two walks and one unearned run. Grayson Shaver struck out one in two scoreless innings of relief.

Christensen had a two-run double and Caden Pfantz had a hit and two RBIs to lead the West Marshall bats. Owen Siegert, D.J. Ridout and Tony McKinney each had a single and drove in a run.

West Marshall visits Saydel on Wednesday for a Heart of Iowa Conference clash.
